ASKAP Exhibition UWA

[ Australian Square Kilometer Array Pathfinder ]

Managed by SPICE

Location: Chemistry Atrium, University of Western Australia
March 2008

Contributions by Paul Bourke

This 10 day exhibition related to various aspects of the SKA pathfinder projects, the wide field array and ASKAP. The exhibition was managed by SPICE, part of the Centre for Learning Technologies, University of Western Australia. The following describes two of the digital exhibits contributed by the author.

In 2006 Peter Morse in conjunction with WASP captured high resolution panoramic images of the Boolardy site. In this exhibition these are displayed on 6 iMacs, although it would scale to much larger numbers.

There are 6 image sets in all, they alternate randomly every 2 minutes. The panos slowly pan right to left although an operator can take control and pan at will. All the displays stay in synchronisation to form a coherent panoramic view.

This exhibit is an interactive walk about the proposed ASKAP site. The telescope geometry is correct (as of Dec 2006) and the dishes are in their proposed positions. The Unity game engine has been employed, users can download their own versions and explore in the comfort of their own home ... the engine supports both Mac OS-X (used here) and MSwindows.
